Materials & Care

"Gold" covers very different materials. Every FERN listing uses one of these labels, based on supplier information:

  • Solid gold: Made of gold alloy throughout (karat stated on the product).
  • Gold vermeil: A gold layer over sterling silver. The layer can wear with use.
  • Gold filled: A thick gold layer bonded to a base metal. It can wear over time.
  • Gold plated: A thin gold layer over a base metal. Plating wears with friction, moisture, and time.
  • Gold-tone finish: Gold-colored finish. It is not a gold layer of stated purity.

General care

These general habits help most everyday jewelry last longer. Follow the care notes on each product page first.

  • Put jewelry on after lotion, perfume, and hairspray.
  • Take it off before swimming, showering, exercising, or cleaning.
  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Store pieces separately so chains don't tangle and surfaces don't scratch.

Plated and gold-tone finishes wear with friction, moisture, and time. That is normal wear, not a defect.
